▫️June 2025 – ICO launches new “AI & Biometrics Strategy”

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has published its updated strategy for regulating AI and biometrics, including reforms to automated decision-making and profiling. The strategy promises clearer expectations on transparency, bias, and rights to redress.

The Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS) has been made mandatory for central government. New records improve visibility of algorithmic tools used in decision-making.

The ICO released findings from audits of AI recruitment tool providers. Key recommendations include candidate transparency, accuracy testing, and stronger alignment with data protection law.

What HR Should Do Now

  1. Maintain a live register of AI systems and vendors used in HR.
  2. Run DPIAs and fairness tests before and after deployment.
  3. Be transparent with employees about when AI is used and how they can challenge outcomes.
  4. Check vendor contracts for bias evidence, accuracy reporting, and exit rights.
  5. Build HR AI literacy so HR can lead confidently at the top table.
